The coin's reverse features the famous painting "The Scream". The Scream depicts an uphill path on Ekberg Hill above the city of Oslo, often mistaken for a bridge because of the parapet that cuts diagonally across the composition; on this path a piercing, high-pitched scream is taking place, which in this work acquires an indefinite and universal character, elevating the scene to a symbol of the collective drama of anguish, pain and fear. The screaming subject is the terrified figure in the foreground, who, in order to emit his cry (and not to protect himself from it), compresses his head with his hands, losing all form and becoming a prey to his own feelings: more than a man, in fact, he resembles an ectoplasm, with his snake-like body, almost skeletonless, hairless, deformed. He is lost along with his mangled voice and human form amidst the tongues of fire in the sky; his nostrils are flared and his eyes barred, witnesses to an unholy abomination. But the real centrepiece of the work is the mouth which, opening in an unnatural spasm, emits a cry that distorts the entire landscape, which thus conveys a feeling of disharmony and imbalance. This feeling of unease is not exclusive either to the background or to Munch's soul: it is in fact distinctive of the fin de siècle pessimism prevalent at the time, which began to question the certainties of the human being, just as Sigmund Freud was investigating the depths of the unconscious.

Only the parapet and the two figures on the left of the composition remain unchanged and upright. These two human figures are deaf to both the cry and the emotional upheaval expressed by the painter: it is no coincidence that they are placed on the edges of the composition, as if they wanted to leave the painting. It is in this way that Munch gives us, in a very crude and lucid way, a metaphor for the falseness of human relationships. On the right, however, is the landscape, unnatural and unwelcoming, as if it were an appendage of the artist's restlessness: the sea is a black, oily mass, while the sky is furrowed by tongues of fire, with undulating clouds that seem laden with blood. The obverse of the coin features the Nativity and the coat of arms of the United States, plated in black ruthenium, and the inscriptions: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" - the issuing country, "ONE DOLLAR" - the face value and "1 OZ. FINE SILVER" - the weight of the coin and the fineness of the silver.
