HOBO NICKEL COIN 1937 Buffalo "Sky Sentinel" Hand Engraved Perticaroli
This coin is a modified version of a 1937 Buffalo Nickel, also known as an Indian Head Nickel.
The reverse side of the coin (the second image) is the original design, featuring an American bison standing on a mound, with the inscriptions "United States of America," "E Pluribus Unum," and "Five Cents." This is the standard design of the Buffalo Nickel, which was minted in the United States from 1913 to 1938.
The obverse side (the first image) has been artistically altered into a hobo nickel, a form of coin art that involves engraving and reshaping the original design. Instead of the usual Native American portrait, the altered coin features a highly detailed engraving of a bald eagle, with a mountainous landscape and trees in the background. The word "Liberty" remains on the upper right side, and the year "1937" is still visible, but the rest of the original design has been modified with intricate carving.
This type of artistic modification was popular among hobos and traveling workers in the early 20th century, who would carve coins as a form of folk art or to trade for food and shelter. Today, hobo nickels are highly collectible due to their uniqueness and craftsmanship.
