The third issue of the Inspirational Icons series is dedicated to Sir Isaac Newton. The motif was created by the coin designer Joel Iskowitz and shows an image of the important scientist with symbols representing his teachings. In his right hand he holds a prism that breaks a beam of light. The 1718 Quarter Guinea gold coin and an open book with an inscribed formula on which an apple rests are in the foreground. In the background are three planets, kept in motion by the forces given in the book's equation. Below the portrait is Newton's signature. The reverse shows the triumphant image of a muse stretching her arm towards the sun. Also included in the design is the official coat of arms of Niue, as well as the denomination and year of issue. Born on December 25, 1642 in the English county of Lincolnshire, Isaac Newton was one of the most important physicists, mathematicians and astronomers in history. With the "Philosophiae Naturalis Principa Mathematica" he researched the theory of gravity, also called the theory of gravitation, which made an important contribution to our understanding of the universe and with the help of which he explained, among other things, why an apple falls to the ground. Other research areas that Newton devoted himself to were optics (refraction of light), algebra and mechanics. In 1696 he was declared guardian of the Royal Mint and minted the first ever quarter guinea coin - as a replacement for the scarce five shilling silver crown. At this time, Newton showed great political commitment. He was knighted in 1705 and held the title "Sir" until his death on March 20, 1726.
